lirc on atomic pi linux ubuntu

Hello - anybody know how to get lirc working on atomicpi running linux?

What have you tried already? is it not working? I would definitely give this a try when my atomic Pi arrives. I just placed an order on Amazon which will be on-stock at the end of May.
I will test lirc since I will be using my TV remote with KODI on this board.

I've tried installing lirc - no problem with that. Not clear how next to control GPIO pins so I can replicate the rpi_lirc functionality to capture ir events.
