Seem to go round and round in circles. I can boot my new machine and login in with the password on screen. If I want to change the password or load on new software, I get asked for the root password. The login password does not work. How do I find the root password or create one.

You should be able most (if not all) admin tasks by using sudo

Thanks. I found LXterminal and ran sudo passwd and entered a new password plus confirmation.
I then went into system tools - Users and Groups. Under user Atomicpi, I turned off password at login on boot. I had to enter the new password to go forward and it was accepted. On reboot the default User is AtomicPI. Wont login on this. Changed to Other, entered AtomicPi, and it booted fine. ??? What I want is a system that boots on power on to the desktop as it will be running as a media center/server. (Still to be decided)Any suggestions ?

Nano is not installed by default, so I installed it. It is much easier to use Nano.0 -
Have you tried mcedit which comes with midnight commander ?
